Compomanes vs Santhara
Opening ceremony of the ASEAN+ Youth Team Chess Championships. Florcencio Campomanes vs Edmund Santhara, The announcer mistakenly mentions it’s the “Caro-Kann Defense” but the opening moves were 1.d4 d5 2. c4 c6.
Lots of press people were there but a pity that the pictures did not appear in the local newspapers for this particular opening [...]

Expanding GilaChess
Being part of the ASEAN+ tournament with the organisers as well as the parents and coaches has given me new insights into scholastic chess. I got to listen to WGM Zhang Jilin and Joseph Toh views on chess learning as well as from soon-to-be International Arbiter Alberto from Spain.
The blogging section (GBN) is taking [...]
Simul by WGM Zhang Jilin
WGM Zhang Jilin giving a simul to 56 junior players. Participants are quite strong including Yeap Eng Cheam and Yeoh Li Tian.

Zhang Jilin’s blog
One of my pleasant discoveries in the Asean+ tourney is finding out that WGM Zhang Jilin also maintains a chess blog. I showed her my blog and she showed me hers. Alas it was in Chinese. So the only thing I could do was use Altavista’s Bebelfish online translator to try to understand some of [...]
Forgotten Heroes
Parents are the forgotten heroes in chess.
(parents taking pictures as they are allowed to for the first 5 minutes after the games start - in the ASEAN+ Team)
Spending 5 days in this scholastic chess tournament has definitely been a new experience for me. I get to see the absolute dedication a parent has to his [...]

ASEAN+ Blitz Tournament
There was a blitz tournament held between the arbiters, assistant arbiters, and officials involved in the ASEAN+ tournaments.WGM Zhang Jilin abstained from playing even though she could play as she was an arbiter of the event. However she said it was “unfair” as she is a professional chess player. And I guess she would murder all [...]
ASEAN+: Opening Ceremony
One of the biggest chess crowd I’ve ever seen exception being the (whisper) tournament that was the biggest tourney in Malaysia and entered into the Malaysian Guinness Book of Record. But this tournament is infinitely organised and crowd control is good.
Although three rounds have already been played, today is the opening ceremony. It’s [...]

ASEAN+: 1st Day
Vietnam leads in the Under 15 category with 6.5 points out of a possible 8.
Northland Primary School is the Under 12 leader with 8/8 after 2 rounds.
MSS KL is the leader for the Under 9 category with 8/8.
I witness a strange game where one of the kids blundered and lost his Queen. What followed was [...]
Unfortunate event
I was informed that a veteran chess player passed away after having health problems (suspected heart attack) in the Stonemaster Pro/Amateur tournament. The tournament had to be stopped and postponed to next month.
ASEAN+: A day before the start
Arrived in the late evening at Hotel Concorde.
This is the view outside the window of one of the hotel room.
Hotel internet rates are really expensive. Here in Concorde Hotel, Shah Alam, they charge RM 57 for 24 hours of Internet. What makes it expensive is that the timer starts as soon as you use it. [...]
