Selangor Open - Serious tournament
I’m thinking twice about entering the Selangor Open 2008. I have 3 reasons stopping me from registering. The high RM70 fee, self-preparation and the venue. I don’t know how to get there but that’s a lame excuse I guess.
But RM 70 it’s a bit high. I’m sure the organisers have a reason but with RM 70 (for CAS members, RM 110 for non members) it means this is a serious tournament. I’ve entered once and it was a very good experience for me. But it requires commitment in time and energy. I remember how drained I was after the last time I entered this tournament.
I don’t think I’m serious enough to enter it. Still, I wait for 2 more weeks to decide whether I can put in some work into my chess to consider entering.

I think selangorchess should do 3 or 4 smaller events say accept up to 12 serious players per group only.Selection will be at the selangorchess discretion based on the above 3 criteria needs. Then they play roundrobin. These people will not need prize money or maybe a small sum but the 3 objective will be met. This way everybody happy and nobody lose money.
To say whether it is a ‘bit high’ to pay RM70 or RM110 is depend on
- How many GMs or foreign IMs entered this tournament. Obviously you do not want to pay RM110 only to see the same local face in this event that roaming a local-RM20-entry-fee-event.
- Prize money. Prize for 10th place should be at least RM200 so atleast there is chances for average joe to ‘balik modal’
- Basic refreshment should be served during the event. At least free flowing of coffea or tea

This is a serious event rather than a social weekend meet. Rather it may be suitable for those
1.)who wants to test their chess knowledge to the full 2.)seeking Fide rating or wanting to improve on it, and
3.)preparing to play in the international events.
Anyway organizers should seek for more money from sponsors. Otherwise chess will lag behind in Malaysia as we are not prepared to pay more than what weekend chess has to offer.
