53. Lee Siew Fai Elegance! That is what TheStar paper lost when the chess column was dropped. (K-economy era) where brainpower triumphs over brawls, indeed a grave blunder to see TheStar takes a step backwards. Anybody recall what did our DPM said during last year 26th Merdeka Chess Championship? And shouldn’t we get his help onto this? If only someone out there can get his ears and make a concerted representation on how much former PM Tun Razak had contributed to the chess development in this country…and then be let down by TheStar’s stun on profits over social responsibilities. And if DPM into the fold doesn’t work out, we can start getting our players into competitions donning white T-shirt with TheStar insignia (stickers) on both shoulders to try for a win-win outcome. Such proactive advertising Gambit may get them to notice our solemn appeal. (Of course, we may run into some legal tussles of not having rights to their insignia. But then, I doubt they can afford the negative publicity in bringing chess players to court!)

46. Lim Yee Weng Chess has been recognized as a sport and has been included in the last two SEA Games in Vietnam and Philippines. The popularity of Chess in Malaysia has been growing as evidentiated by the number of participants in chess tournaments today. Chess has also been taught in various schools all over the Malaysia. Bringing back Mr Quah Chess column will be a positive move by The Star in recapturing a market that is ever growing in Malaysia. I sincerely hope that The Star will reconsider reinstating the Chess Column in light of the above said reasons. Thank You (Two time Malaysian Chess Champion & SEA Games Athlete in Vietnam & Philippines)

40. Ong Kung Churn Chess is well known internationally, as a board game its dirt cheap, you can even create your own, everyone can play, size does not matter, age is no issue, its have no racial preference, being a doctor or a successful business will not have advantages. Everything is on the board total transparency yet its not obvious. Its only requirement is yous brain. To win you need to think ahead, anticipate & not make mistake. In yahoo game site you will always find chess is among the top 5. Start playing & by the time you reach a 1500 rating. You will realise the potential of a chess column. Its your move.

1. Andrew Ooi I have been reading Quah Seng Sun’s chess column for over 10 years. In fact it’s the only reason I but The Star on Friday. From the number of chess tournaments being held in and around the country, it is clear the popularity of chess is booming. Please don’t cancel this column now when there is so much commnunity interest in the game.
