Black Asus EEE PC for NC reporting?

I tested out the black Asus EEE PC at a DiGi store near my place.

It was everything I expected. The screen was small but very clear. The whole notebook was super light and felt like a toy. That’s a big plus for me as I’m tired of lugging my Dell 640m around in a backpack that easily weighs 5Kg with the power adapter, notebook cooler and other accessories.

It had Windows XP installed on it and with only 512Mb RAM installed it was surprisingly fast. I guess it’s because it doesn’t have a real harddisk but uses a 4GB of ‘flash type’ memory which is faster since it has no moving parts. That was also one of it’s weakness as storage is only 4GB. With Window XP and MS Office installed it only had 355Mb left of free space. I guess that can be solved by putting in a 8GB SD card or using another thumbdrive. In short, this little sub notebook can do anything other ‘real’ notebooks can. I liked the zippy startup - 23 seconds to bootup !!

For the chess enthusiast, it can even run Fritz and Chessbase. Hmmm.. I wonder if there are any GMs using an ASUS EEE PC?

The keyboard is definitely not for the touch typist. I found it hard to type fast with all my fingers on the keyboard but if I just use 2 or 3 fingers ala ‘hunt and peck’ it was ok.

Another plus I found was that the ASUS modem provided was a PCI express which can fit in perfectly into my DELL 640m too.

On the spot I wanted to get the ASUS EEE PC with the DiGI Edge package (RM 123) but too bad my credit card was declined. It seems that DiGi will charge RM 2900++ to the card even though you will be paying RM 123 per month. Somehow my Maybank VISA had problems with such a large transaction though I have used it for buying items of a few hundred RM at a time.

Oh well, there goes my hopes to use an EEE PC for live blogging in Wilayah Kompleks tomorrow. Still, I think I can manage an average of two updates per day when I go for lunch and tea break at Bruharry Restaurant (which has FREE WiFi) nearby. Twitter updates will be unlimited since I can do that via mobile phone SMS.
