Top GMs in 2nd and 3rd Philippines Open

Most countries have one major big open once in a year (eg: Malaysian Open) but Philippines are more gila chess than I thought as they have not two but three major opens!! Maybe that’s the way to make more GMs for the country :)

Tomorrow (May 7) will be the start of the twin-tournament Philippine International Open Chess Championship.  It’s held at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center in Olongapo City.

Of course, our very own IM Mas Hafizulhelmi is Malaysia’s sole representative to this event and all our best wishes are with him. He has been trying hard for the elusive GM norm and let’s hope all his effort will be rewarded with a GM norm from one of these 2 back-to-back tournament.

On a personal note, I really wished I was there to report on this tournament. Perhaps next year when my blogs earn me enough money I can pay for my travels to big Asian tournaments such as these :)
