As usual Ian Udani conquered this one day event as he done so with other one day events these past few months. Ian finished an outstanding 6/6 and takes home RM 500 for his efforts. He beat Ganesh, Andrew Ooi, Abdullah Khairi KZ, Jax Tham, Kamaluddin Yusof and Mohammad Nabil.

Also good to see that Kamal Abdullah is making a successful comeback with fast improvements in his rapid games. He finished in 3rd position. The best performing family must be the father (Azman – 8th), son (Mohammad Nabil – 2nd) and daughters(Nur Najiha and Nur Nabila – U12 prizes) who all won prizes.

As for me I played poorly against Ian and Kamal losing both those games as White early in the opening. Wished I could have held past the middlegame but I collapsed early. My four wins were disappointing too as it was against beginners and not really strong players.

Does anybody remember this old video (in the ancient VCR format) called Silicide? It is rather old but I recently took a look at it and found it was a gem!

The whole video is about White avoiding the main Open Sicilian which normally arises after

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 (any move) 3. d4.

White avoids d4 and instead goes

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 (any move) 3. Nc3.

Point Break movie download I had the chance to watch this video in computer format and it was pretty long at about 1 hour. At first it put me to sleep very fast not because of the content but because I watched it at night after I finished my work. SIlly me.

However, the past few days I managed to watch the entire video in one sitting and have been rewatching it over and over again trying to predict the some of the variation before the video mentions it.

I enjoyed it because I saw that it was pretty practical as it’s quite easy for many of the position discussed to arise in a real game.

It discusses how to play against the various popular black replies.

• 2…. Nf6 /2…g6/2….a6

I really liked the suggestion given by Davies against the hyper accelarated Dragon which I see so many juniors like to use against me.

1.e4 c5 2. Nf3 g6 3. h4

However it was placed at the end of the video and classified as rare and Davies only comment was as a 2. g6 player himself, he find it hard to ‘meet’ h4 in this position. No games or variations were discussed. Naturally that left me unsatisfied. So..

I dug up my personal collection of TWIC (This Week in Chess) on my harddisk   (also bundled with my Malaysian Megabase 2008) which has a modest 734,492 games and found 19 games with this position. From the stats feature in Chessbase (shortcut key ‘S’) I saw that it was favourable to White:

Since the games in TWIC is of above average quality, going thru the 19 games gave me an idea what to play for in the position. I love the search and statistic feature of Chessbase.

I really envy kids these days. They have access to tools such as Chessbase, videos, Opening Encyclopedia CDs, Megabases etc. If I had these things back when I was young (not that I’m very old now ) , I would have made great improvements in my chess.

My flash was off and I was standing at a respectable distance from the kids playing there. Disappointed, I walked out of the school and went home without posting the pictures or the results.

Fantasia/2000 hd Had this “conversation” in the shoutbox with Malaysian and I am of the opinion that the National Rating is not that important. At least not the speed of updates anyway. I just don’t understand the commotion made about how “late” the updates are.

To be fair, most of the updates match the time FIDE rating list itself comes out. Sure it’s a little late but only by 2 weeks or so. Why the fuss on fast updates? Most other countries have their national rating updated only once or twice a year! In fact I’m quite surprised that my recent results in the Royal Selangor was submitted so quickly to FIDE by Tse Pin.

If you remember, I tried to create an online version of the rating list so that you can compare your present rating with your previous ones but I’ve since given up on that. It was too much trouble matching a person’s record from the past lists. The only common identifier I had was the player’s name. However there are several names spelled differently for the same person and there was no unique identifier like the FIDE reference number. If there was a standard way for tournament organisers to enter player’s name (eg: using player reference number instead of name) then probably rating automation can be possible. However, I don’t think that can happen anytime soon.

Believe me I do not envy the person maintaining it.  It’s not easy dealing with the different tournament organisers and ensuring the names, results etc are in the proper format. The Time Machine dvdrip Yeah. Stating the obvious. In relation to chess, I’m surprised how fast Fritz 11 (pirated) came out right after the original was released. Only in a space of a few weeks and it’s already here in our pasar malam and some shopping complexes that still allow pirated cds to be sold. Of course, the usual Low Yat Plaza / Sungei Wang Plaza / Imbi Plaza is no longer a haven for pirated software. Must have been some strict crackdown from the authorities.

Liberty Stands Still video Anyway, software such as Fritz and Rybka are first class engines to help any chess player analyse their games. Good alternatives such as freeware engines like Crafty are almost as strong but the interface they come in is a little less friendly to use.

I mention this because I have to thank piracy for my computer programming foundation. Of course I do not condone piracy and use 99% licensed and original software on my notebook today. However back when I was studying computer programming, compilers such as COBOL, Turbo C, Turbo Pascal etc were all very expensive. If it weren’t for piracy, I would never had a chance to learn to use them.

Fast forward 20 years and I use original commercial software tools at the companies I work for. Tools such as DB2, Oracle, Delphi, Borland C++ etc are still just as expensive but they are all paid for by the company. I am grateful for having had the experience of using so many of the programming tools when I was a student. It certainly helped me become a better programmer I am today
