The Hungry Theory

hungry-chess The brief chit chat with Woo Beng Keong and Balendran during our Taylor’s Open lunch break yesterday got me thinking about how satiated we Malaysians are. We are not hungry enough. Economically we are well to do (relatively speaking that is). In this respect we are ahead of Vietnam and Philippines. But in the chess arena things are the direct opposite. Chess has no future professionally here in Malaysia. Vietnamese on the other hands can survive on professional chess. Being outclassed by these countries is no surprise.

But let’s not use that as an excuse to stay mediocre. If we can hype up interest and awareness of chess in Malaysia, I’m sure the money will come in. This is where the internet can come in as viral marketing tool. To market chess to the masses and publicise chess like no other medium can.

Anyway, my personal aim with chess websites and blogs is simple. To generate more buzz for chess in Malaysia and promote a healthy chess community that’s hungry for chess news. :D

You’re right. Malaysians in general are not hungry enough for success in the game.

Anyway, Keep up the Good Work, Andrew.
