Are You Being Served? divx I was surprised to meet my Advanced Programming teacher, Jason Lim (picture) at last Sunday’s PERCAWI Open. He taught me back when I was doing my advanced diploma in computer studies. It was the most memorable class for me because there were some programming whiz kids in class and they always challenged (and tortured) Mr Jason. He was a competent teacher but was always a good sport and accepted the “correction” by those gifted students whenever he inadvertently made some mistakes. It was his class that made me interested in programming and later make it my profession. It was also the only class where I actually took effort in reading up library books, magazines and any literature I can get on about programming.

Back to chess. Apparently he has a son taking part in the Under 15 section. He is a “brand new” chess parent as this is his first experience seeing a chess competition taking place. He had the wrong impression that the U15 was going to be a knock out tourney and it would all be finished before lunch time. He was surprised to find out that it would stretch till 5 or 6pm. Anyway, he stayed around the tournament hall the whole day watching many of the games being played out.

Yep. I only got to play and win one full game in last week’s PERCAWI open. I also got a draw but ended up with 3.5 points. That’s because I had 2 walkovers. I finished 27th place our of 74 participants in the Open section. Also, the interactive crosstable was not posted as I fell asleep after preparing it that night and then forgot about it.

Mas is playing at the 41st Biel International Chess Festival and has scored a fantastic 6.5/9 rounds and now faces GM Evgeny Gleizerov ( FIDE 2549) in round 10 (For GM Evgeny’s photo go to http://hairulovchessmaniacs.blogspot.com/ ) .I am guessing that the game should start around 8pm Malaysian time.
I spoke to Mas this morning & was glad to hear that a win in this round would give him a GM norm! Otherwise a draw with GM Evgeny followed by a win in the last round would also be sufficient.
As far as I can recall, I am not aware of any other Malaysian that had come this close before (Maybe Zi Jing?). Rightfully, we should all feel excited. Unfortunately, the games are not live but the results will be out by the morning at http://www.bielchessfestival.ch/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=144&Itemid=169
One of my favorite games was Mas vs GM Ulbin in round 3. You may replay the game at http://www.bielchessfestival.ch/cms/uploadfiles/games/dgt_chesstheatre.htm & see how he completely demolished a GM. Mas had informed me that when the game ended, he had about 50mins while GM Ulbin only had 10seconds!
That’s posted by Lim Yee Weng on the newsgroup today. It’s certainly a big deal as Mas is very close to a GM norm. Too bad there’s no live games or reports. We will have to wait till tomorrow morning then.
Best of luck in tonight’s game, Mas!

Every chess fan worth his salt already know the coming Malaysian Chess Festival which includes the Malaysian Open/AmBank Open/Merdeka Team Rapid & Classical. A month after that, October is also packed. It looks like every week of that month will have at least on event. At least one of them will be unique or record breaking in terms of number. Apparently October is school holidays and it’s the optimal time to have tourneys.
I will post the details into the calendar when some of the events are confirmed.

Hmmm I’ll probably have to look back the past gilachess.com past results and count…
The Art of War III: Retribution psp Yes. Ian won yet again in today’s PERCAWI open which had a massive 275 240 number of participants. Ian ploughed thru the field with 5 straight wins and settled for a draw in the last round against Kamaluddin Yusof when no one else could catch up with him.

With such a large number of participants it is not surprising that there are hiccups and slight delays were inevitable but after the late start, everything was smooth sailing.

As for me, personally, I was disappointed with my results. I got to play and win one game and draw one game only! More on this later..
I’ll post the full results and pictures after I have had my bath and dinner (and if I don’t fall asleep after that
).

Push movie download Luckily I noticed this morning and quickly renewed it using GoDaddy. If I had been late it would been a hassle to pay for re-activation fees or risk losing my domain like Stonemaster.biz.
Since ChessPublisher is a service, it’s bad for it to go down for a couple of days as it also affects all the blogs using the chess diagrams hosted on this domain.
Price : USD 7.15 for the year which is pretty cheap because I got it with discounts. Renewal was done in minutes and I paid online using PayPal. ChessPublisher should be up in 24 hours.

One of the essential traits one must have to work and make money online is that you have to be disciplined and deliver your work on time. I definitely lack in this respect and have procrastinated for the past several weeks. Now I’m catching up on all the backlog of work.
What this means is that there is also a backlog of chess news waiting to be published on GilaChess.com such as the UUM results and pictures, Tanjung Karang detail map, Mas in Biel, and the coming PERCAWI open. I also missed the chance to go to Singapore for the 4th World Schools Individual Championships. I was offered a place to help out in the event doing the bulletin and/or website but missed this chance because of work and a wedding dinner this weekend. Don’t get many chances to go out of Malaysia to report on chess event. What a waste..
Anyway I will try to post updates later tonight on GilaChess.com

My main opening as White against 1. e4 e5 is the Vienna (2. Nc3 and 3. f4) so it’s natural for me to look at the King’s Gambit too. Even though I don’t have a book on the Vienna or King’s Gambit, today, with chess videos and databases it’s easy for me to start learning about the main lines for the King’s Gambit.
Here’s an example King’s Gambit in Grandmaster play. No lesser than V. Anand fell to the dangerous King’s gambit :-
