Ian Udani triumps again!

Here’s a quick post I’m making at the Kelana LRT station (piggy backing on the free Mr Pizza WiFi from across the road) before I get home.

ian-udani

I asked Ian today how many first prizes he has won. He says he don’t know.

Hmmm I’ll probably have to look back the past gilachess.com past results and count…

Yes. Ian won yet again in today’s PERCAWI open which had a massive 275 240 number of participants. Ian ploughed thru the field with 5 straight wins and settled for a draw in the last round against Kamaluddin Yusof when no one else could catch up with him.

With such a large number of participants it is not surprising that there are hiccups and slight delays were inevitable but after the late start, everything was smooth sailing.

As for me, personally, I was disappointed with my results. I got to play and win one game and draw one game only! More on this later..

I’ll post the full results and pictures after I have had my bath and dinner (and if I don’t fall asleep after that :) ).

He is definitely a cut above the rest but he still was using 2 hands when in time trouble at Percawi event. He even had a little more time than his oponent. To me that was persistent cheating. That is bad for a good player.

Ian’s opponents didn’t complain and neither should YOU! He’s is a breath of fresh air in our Malaysian chess scene so let him enjoy Chess and stop being such a critic.

When he breached the rules, he was wrong whether I complain or not. It is not for you to condone what was obviously cheating whether he realised it or not. He is fond of using both hands and you say to keep quiet? Please play fair, especially if he was the strongest around to show good example. Follow the rules.

By the way Chess Lover, you cannot stop me from writing what I feel was injustice. Please consider carefully what you write if you really love chess.

by the way Malaysian..Who are you to judge a chessplayer like that!!!i think your not a chessplayer ur such a s_ _ _ _ _ critic!!

Again we have your type of personal attacker on this site.

I said he is a good player, a cut above the rest. That is a compliment to the person. The fact is he tends to use both hands and that is not allowed under the rules, if you know them at all. If you don’t, look up in the Net.

If he persists in doing so tournment after tournament, that is cheating. For your info, he has been warned by an arbiter some time before, I was told. If he still does it, even if he is the world champion, it is still cheating. Hope you understand the facts of the matter and stop calling names, which is the worse deed you can do on a blog.

In panic time there are so many things happen in the board not intentionally done and i witnessed that!thats why their are arbiters to give warning incase of something wrong!you can say somebody that he is a cheater if hes still doing it after the warning and his game is forfited by the abiter! In percawi event i witnessed that Ian follow the instruction with no complain.I cant see anyform of cheating there!!and u cant won 5 games due to cheating!!!

You are lying because that warning was not at Percawi event.
Therefore you did not witness the event which you said you did. Also can you tell me which game you saw at Percawi that he breached the rules and was warned by the arbiter?

If you do something wrong, whether you panicked or not, it didn’t matter. Else everyone can plead he was panicky and got away from being penalised.

I already said he is a good player and a cut above the rest. He won because he played well, BUT he breached the rules. If one continues to do so tournament after tournament, that is intentional cheating and there is no excuse.

I would hesitate to play against someone who is likely to cheat when the chips are down. I suppose you are his loyal supporter and nothing will make you change your mind.

You have not put forward any case to say it was not against the rules to use both hands. Therefore, you accepted that he actually did it and although it was clearly a fault, it is alright because he is Udani.

Old habits die hard! Playing chess with one hand, including castling, was a recent development. Many don’t know this, even many of our local players. (Yes,yes, ignorance of the law/rule is no excuse - agreed). Udani comes from a country where many are ‘gila’ chess and I bet he has been playing chess with both hands for many, many years. (Btw, i don’t know him personally). So in time trouble, what has been done naturally for years, comes back into play.
Again, it is up to his opponents to complain, not us. However, having said that, players must be taught the new rules of chess in some kind of forum, online or otherwise. Old habits die hard, my friend!

What sort of excuse is that? How long does it take to change the habit. I can see he has no intention to change that habit. Tournament after tournament he does it.

I have not come across any local player who does what he does, and have people like you to support him. If he is such a good player like you think, then he must practise good sportsmanship. A winner who has bad habits will not be respected by locals especially if he is a foreigner. Very bad example.

Once again lets stop for being such a critic!!!maybe ,maybe not, one day Ian can spend a time to join us in our conversation and share his view about this!Good day my friend!!

MyAvatars 0.2

By the way, if you lie to us to try to support him, that itself does not reflect good on you. Please don’t do that again.

Actually, you may think it is a small matter. Let him play in Merdeka and let a GM tell him off. How shameful!

You have got it wrong that I was “complaining” although I was not his opponent. I was just pointing out a fact. If I had complained to the arbiter that day, it would truly be complaining.

If you enter a tournament you are deemed to know the rules. It’s up to you to update yourself. I can’t believe a strong player like him is so ignorant. You think he is a country bumpkin, is it?
