Yasser Clock Simul

GM Yasser Seirawan had a hard time against Syakir but still, Yasser managed to squeeze a win in the endgame when the Grandmaster was slightly worse for a long time. The game was interesting enough to hold Dato Tan’s attention for the entire duration of the game.

I am happy to see Hairulov’s chess blog getting better and more popular than ever. His blog is definitely the most active nowadays.
Here’s a brand new blog from another local chess player…

CD of Games from Chess books

No. This is not a ‘pirated’ CD but a collection of games in computer playable format from about 130 chess books. This CD is only useful if you own the actual chess books. For me, I would use the notebook beside the chess book to follow the games or position.

Offline for a while

I got a virus from sharing USB thumbdrives from various people who wanted something from my notebook during the DATMO. Tried to scan using the latest AVG and cleaned most of the spyware/virusses.

However there are signs of one or more viruses present in my harddisk. I tried to work on the notebook but there [...]

Unsung heroes

In almost of the DATMO editions you would see this group of people from GACC of University Malaya. They are volunteer helpers and their help has mostly gone unnoticed. A big hand to them!

Tired

It’s 3 days after DATMO and I still feel tired. Perhaps it’s because I have not stop to take a rest. I have been meeting people the last two days talking about web projects. Today I am going to stay at home and sleep most of the day.

Malaysian Chess Heroes

For once I have to agree with ‘Malaysian’. FM Lim Yee Weng and IM Mas Hafizulhelmi’s valiant efforts in chess is a good example to Malaysian chess players. Both have come close to obtaining the GM norm. That in itself is must be inspirational to many Malaysians.
Both have made sacrifices in their work to strive and [...]

DATMO over or is it?

Dato Arthun Tan Malaysian Open is over. It has reached the 5 editions promised by Dato Tan. It is indeed sad to think there will be no more international tournaments of this magnitude in Malaysia for next year.
I was hoping that in Dato speech that new sponsors have already been found and would take over [...]

Clarification on Scoresheet dispute

Back to Jax Tham’s resignation to protest the dispute on his opponent not recording.
I got it wrong. Actually Jax’s opponent totally did not record a single move till the end when time trouble was looming. It was only then, Jax noticed his opponent scoresheet was blank!
Some say the correct thing to do was to stop [...]

WIM Zhang Xiaowen

WIM Zhang Xiaowen won 2nd best female in DATMO with a cash prize of USD 250.
Incidentally the picture taken was when she was walking away after taking the prize. I was too late to take her picture and just called out to her “wait…”. She actually heard me and was sporting enough to turn [...]
