Being without a regular full time job makes what I’m going to try out possible. I’m doing away with monophasic sleep for about a month. That is, I’m not going to sleep in one chunk of my usual 6-7 hours but break it up into naps. You can read more about this in StevePavlina’s blog Maximum Overdrive movie download Spartan movie
about polyphasic sleep. My previous tries were unsuccessful because I was not disciplined enough. This is my second attempt. Anyway, what this means is that I will sleep in short bursts of 20-30 minutes naps taken 6 times a day. Planning naps in 4 hours intervals (2am – 6am – 10am – 2pm – 6pm -10pm)
If I can get into the rhythm, I would only sleep about 2-3 hours a day. Think about the extra hours I will have !! Of course, some will say sleep deprivation will impair one’s daily functions and may even be dangerous to one’s health. But I don’t believe so since there are those who have already experienced this successfully (like Steve Pavlina). The reason I’m doing this is I’m already maintaining irregular hours, working at odd hours like 11pm-4am 8-12am and sleeping in between. Another reason is of course, the tremendous number of waking hours gained in a day.
Chess will be a good measure of the effect on my mental faculties. My current online ratings on playchess is 1200 and 1600 for bullet and blitz respectively. It’ll be interesting to chart my rating to see how much falls and for how long before it goes back to it’s base (if ever).

Anyway here’s a mention to the World’s Junior 2008:-
It’s Under-20 for those not familiar. Taking place on August 2-16 in Gaziantep, Turkey.
In the Women’s World Junior, notable names are WGM Yifan Hou (yeah she is not yet a GM), WGM Vera Nebolsina, and WIM Katerina Nemcova.
The boy’s section include name such as GM Li Chao, GM Luka Lenic, GM Sergei Zhigalko and GM Le Quang Liem.

I always face problems with internet connections during DATMO as there is no WiFi signal in the playing hall making live reporting hard. Sure there is the Hotel WiFi which cost an arm and a leg. I remember one of the years that we could receive Starbucks signal in the Hotel playing hall but that signal has disappeared. It’s probably still there but too weak to pick up.

This is just a thought. Would the Malaysian team be it’s strongest with it’s 5 strongest players based on FIDE Rating list?

This would be a young an very strong team – the only old member would be FM Peter Long.
I asked if he would play in such a case and he said he would be happy to help by being the team’s trainer and just be the back-up player if anyone got sick.

Also there is already an on-going round robin selection tournament with 8 players taking part. It’ll be interesting to see what is the actual team composition. I assume we will get to see that after a month’s time..

I woke up this morning (for a change!) with a sad realisation. This may be last chance we can meet real GMs in the Merdeka Team. With this year’s Malaysian Open being it’s last, next year’s Merdeka team events will be mostly local. I regret not playing 
Anyway just a reminder. Today is the last day to register all the main events of the Malaysian chess festival. A good person to contact for this would be Gregory Lau and the best place to meet up and pay is in Wilayah
