Some say the correct thing to do was to stop the game but let the clock run on the opponent’s time while he completed the score sheet. But in the game, the clock was stopped while the arbiter was called to the table. In the discussion between player and arbiter, Jax’s opponent actually took the time to get Jax’s scoresheet and quickly copy down the moves. However after move 25 he presumably could not decipher Jax’s writing and just scribbled wavy lines.
Jax point was that even though his position was losing during the time trouble, he had to take time out to write down his move while his opponent saved time by not writing. The clock was stopped for the opponent to copy Jax’s scoresheet. In the end, for not recording Jax’s opponent was penalised 2 minutes.

Rule of Penang Chess Leaque 2007…. Even a state chess association has such a plainly stated rule. Why an international tournament doesn’t, is really a shame.

Time Control & Move Recording
Each player shall be given 1 hour to complete his/her game. Recording of move is compulsory for all players until the last 5 minutes.
Penalties for not recording: 1. Deduct 5 minutes and updating the moves, 2. Deduct 10 minutes and updating the moves, 3. Lost the game.

i am doubt about this, i don’t think jax is such an idiot…

Andrew, are you sure JAX gave his score sheet to his opponent or the arbiter took the score sheet to the opponent? I don’t think JAX will pass the score sheet to opponent or the arbiter pass the score sheet to opponent while they still discuss about what happen…
this does not make sense…

Jax opponent took Jax scoresheet while Jax was talking to the arbiter. Jax didn’t hand the scoresheet over to his opponent.

Did his oponent do the same game after game? This game was played somewhere near the middle of the tournament, so the breach of rules could have happened before that as well.

I really dislike these type of people. Honestly, chess tournaments like these follow an honour system to some extent. In fact, it is possible to cheat(for example) by getting third party assistance without being caught easily but most people don’t because they are trusted to abide by the rules. I played in the Malaysian Chess Festival too and I remember playing an opponent who repeated the position 3 times. When I claimed a draw, he attempted to cancel off the last move(the second repetition) so that it would look like I was repeating only twice. Luckily I was practically staring at his scoresheet when he was about to do that, so he didn’t cancel off the final move.

i think we should stop to discuss this topic. Jax tham is not the one who complaint and protest here,but Andrew was.
We also did not know whether it is true or not Jax resign to protest or he just resign because he is lost or he is resign because he fail to “win on time” or any other reasons.
In my opinion, if Jax is in a winning position, and something like this happen, i don’t think he will resign to protest. As a result, the motif to resign or to discuss is clear!
In addition, if jax was unhappy with the arbiter decision, he will appeal right after the game and he was not. This means that he already agreed and accepted the decision. As a result, we as the third party should not discuss it anymore.
