Ideas for chess registration
One of the nightmares for both chess organisers is last minute registrations. Late starts are a norm nowadays because of these last minute entries.
I was joking when I told Tse Pin during the MBSSKL tourney that one solution is to swipe someone’s IC thru a scanner. But now thinking about it I think that’s quite feasible. Everybody has an Identity Card (IC) right ? Well the majority of local chess players do anyway. Using the IC as the entry into the computer, a program can easily be written to pull out the correct info such as the player’s full name and national rating. IC could be typed in or better yet use a smart card reader.
A web based system can also be written to take in pre-registrations using the same idea. IC no as key. Organisers can easily check the status of players such as pre-registered, paid/not-paid, junior/adult, association member (discount entitlement), etc.
Just an idea. What do you think ?

The first 6 digits for any person eligible for MyKad is already fixed, so it is just a matter of writing a program to generate the last four digits derived from a person’s name to come up with an IC kind of 12 digit ID number.
For juniors, until they reach 12 the last four “digits” may perhaps be alphabets rather than numeric so you can tell at a glance they are juniors.
After so many tournaments perhaps 70% are repeat participants and their records are filed somewhere. It is a matter of just inputting these into a data base and informing the person his ID number at the appropriate time.

I think players should just be asked to memorize their membership number, i.e. J1234. That would only leave the few non-members who only have to enter their name into the tournament.
Then, from the membership numbers, I guess someone should be able to write a code that enters a player into the swiss manager/swiss 46 tournament file, by, for example, adding the names and ratings into the file through a text editor, taking the information from the national rating excel file. Maybe you can write this code and sell it =)
