Malaysian FIDE rated players(October 2008)

The latest FIDE rating list is out.
Interesting facts:-

Malaysia is now no. 73 in the world average rankings - 12 places behind Singapore (ranked 61).

Lim Yee Weng just missed the 2400 mark (I thought he achieved it in DATMO?)

Mas has crossed the 2400 mark

Peter Long is now in the active list with a slight [...]

Local player’s benefitted?

Catching up on chess news, I re-read Quah Seng Sun’s article on Malaysian chess at the crossroads:-
Will we see another Merdeka chess festival of the same level as this year’s? Will there be another Malaysia open chess championship that can match the pulling power of the Arthur Tan memorial? Do our local players benefit from [...]

GilaChess.com email

The above is my new email. I’m using Google Apps to host my own email @ gilachess.com. My main email gilachess (at) gmail dot com still works. This is just an alternative as some may find it easier to remember.
Thinking of opening this to other GilaChess.com members to have their own email@gilachess.com. What [...]

Intramuros

Surround (panoramic) view of the Intramuros, Manila, Philippines.
This is one of the fort known as Fort Santiago.
This was taken on 13th September (rest day between PGMA and Pichay tourney)

Intramuros, located along the southern bank of the Pasig River, was built by the Spaniards in the 16th century and is the oldest district of the [...]

Virus infected again!

First it was my Dell (now temporarily out of commission) now it’s my sister’s Sony notebook.

All I did was just turn off AVG, a freeware antivirus, for a moment while trying to install a different antivirus. As soon as I disabled AVG I started getting popups after less than 30 minutes!! The popups said [...]

Suspended due to high CPU use

This blog was suspended due to high CPU overhead on the shared webhosting server.
I’ve said “sorry” to the webhosting company and they’ve restored this blog. As safety measure, I’ve disabled the shoutbox for the moment.

Update: I’ve enabled it back but for registered members only. I’ve also slowed down the ‘refresh rate’ from 8 seconds to [...]

Pichay cup over

It was a great experience to witness a chess event outside of Malaysia for once. It was very similiar to Malaysian Open but with some obvious differences. The large amount of prize money for the back to back PGMA-Pichay Cup tournament obviously attracted more GMs compared to DATMO. DATMO on the other hand with lesser [...]

Carabou

That’s the Philippine’s National animal - the Carabao. It’s the water buffalo. Notice the pronounciation of Carabao is similiar to the Malay equivalent - Kerbau ? The Philippines language has roots in Spanish, Malay, Indian language and a host of other languages.
Kiri, Kanan has the same meaning in Tagalog as it is in Malay. [...]

4th Pichay Cup: Final day

It’s the final day of the back to back tournament.

GM Li Shilong is assured to be the champion with a one point lead in front of his nearest rival. Even if he lost the last round he would win on tie break. However, I’m sure he would get at least a draw today as then [...]
