    The latest FIDE rating list is out.

    Interesting facts:-

    • Malaysia is now no. 73 in the world average rankings – 12 places behind Singapore (ranked 61).

    • Mas has crossed the 2400 mark

    Catching up on chess news, I re-read Quah Seng Sun’s article on Malaysian chess at the crossroads:-

    Will we see another Merdeka chess festival of the same level as this year’s? Will there be another Malaysia open chess championship that can match the pulling power of the Arthur Tan memorial? Do our local players benefit from the presence of foreign chess talents? How can we ensure that our players benefit from them?

    I think player’s like IM-elect Lim Yee Weng in particular benefitted as he has got most of his ELO increase on Malaysian soil. Of course there should be more than that one success. But I’m of the opinion that DATMO is only 5 years and Malaysia has just got on the International chess map even though we have had other past events like the Wah Seong, Asian cities etc. We are just beginning to be known by foreign chess players and Malaysia is becoming another regular stop for those globe trotting GMs.
