A vacuum that needs to be filled

image This is just my personal opinion and not anything official.

With the end DATMO ended, there is a big vacuum in the Malaysian Chess calendar. Nature abhors a vacuum and I’m sure some other new tournament that will fill in this gap. This tournament, perhaps not on the scale of DATMO, but an international Open that is attractive enough to get foreign players to come.

Right now (and perhaps for the past 20~30 years)is not more internation tournaments but a good way of nurturing young players from the junior levels and then providing them with a systematic programme for them to achieve IM/GM levels and then doing away with all the crap 30mins weekend tournaments and be replaced by serious business tournaments. Once we get a bunch of young players with enough talent then we can consider to have more international tournaments. No point just playing in them when we don’t really learn anything from the games after that.

Perhaps that’s true. Having more classical long time controls like Selangor Open can only be good. We desperately need a new generation of juniors to follow the steps of the previous ones batch which includes Yee Weng, Nicholas, Mas, Zi Jing etc.

On the other hand, players like Yee Weng benefitted as he got most of his ELO points and eventual IM title from DATMO. Without DATMO, overseas tournament is the only way to go.
