Where does the money come from?
One thing I regret during DATMO (again!) is not working harder to find the opportunity to talk or interview the players particularly the Chinese players. WGM Zhang Jilin told me last year alone she travelled to about 70 countries playing chess!
It’s amazing that an above average player like Zhang Jilin (ELO 2300+) can fund her travels and living from chess. In DATMO we can clearly see that there is a big group of Chinese players in DATMO. The same group of Chinese players are seen playing in the coming PGMA cup in the Philippines too. Li Chao, WGM Gu Xiaobing, Xu Tong, Liu Deshun, Wang Li, WIM Zhang Xiowen are among the familiar names taking part. Clearly they will continue to fly all over other parts of the world taking part in similiar competitions.
I don’t know whether the money comes from the Chinese Federation, government or the chess leagues or a combination, but it’ll be great if Malaysia can emulate the same conditions so that our own players who are 2300+ can do the same.

When you get the public’s attention…When you have a really good player Malaysians can look up to. You have also got to get publicty.
When most of the top players prefer to play once a year that isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Just like tennis, eg. do you know who is the national champion, if they have one.
You ask any chess player who is the top squash player, bet you 90% will be able to tell you. And I think squash is nowhere as popular as chess.
To Gilachess, How can i reach MCF to check on my FIDE rating?
I played in National Closed 2006 ( meet 3 rated player and managed to win 1 against rated player), played in AMBank Chess Challenge 2007 and 2008 recently. However, when i checked in FIDE website, total game played only 11. Eventhough i’m not a strong player, i really need to check if i am qualified for FIDE rating by November to participate in Terengganu Open in Dec 08. Please Help me and reply to my email.
TQ
Does anybody here has the result for National Closed 2006 and AMBank Challenge 2007? if so i would much appreciate if u could email to me at tarabas.chess@yahoo.com

dont hope. this is malaysia, chess only gets support after all other sports like hockey, football, etc etc gets enough money to send their players all over the world and have a lifelong pension.
