Since I’m a patzer, I’d love to collect useful chess related tips into a note book. Better yet why not save them into a website a share them. This will be my new website titled “Teach The Patzer”. URL to be announced once completed. I’m doing this because I’ve learnt how to use new templates from an unrelated project I’m doing right now.

I didn’t get any details from the organisers of the Terengganu Open and I thought they did not want to publicise the event via GilaChess.com. Anyway I found the email from Encik Arshad dated 11 November in an email account I rarely use (andrewooi at yahoo). GilaChess (at) gmail and yahoo are two email accounts that I check regularly.

With our less than stellar performance at the Olympiad, I personally think that improvements should be seen at the grass roots level. No point discussing how we should have won that critical last round which would have propelled us to 80th ++ position. No point discussing who was the weak link or who pulled the team etc. Mas, Yee Weng, Mok, Jimmy and Edward did their best despite the result. Their time, effort and energy has already been sacrificed for this Olympiad and adding salt to the wound by criticising them just doesn’t help.
We need to discover new talents. I believe there are many “Yeoh Li Tians” out there that’s left to be found. I don’t care if history shows us that most of our Malaysian talents lose their “drive” after universities. If we have more talented kids at the very start very likely there will be the odd one or two willing to go the distance and put in the blood and tears needed for professional chess.

Took a different route home yesterday because I was curious to see exactly where the Venus Kids Chess Camp was held.
It’s a big double storey corner house that is converted into a day care center. They are no strangers to teaching kids. I guess it’s good to see more of such places teaching chess to beginners as we seriously need more new talents from the grassroots level.
I passed by Ikano Power Center and saw a similiar center teaching kids arts and craft. I could easily see chess fitting in nicely.

Perhaps some local coaches can recommend an introduction to chess?
In fact, I already see this happening in one of the day care centres in Taman Tun Dr Ismail. They have employed the services of a few local coaches to teach chess to the kids as part of their holiday program.

USA has something to celebrate as both their Open and Women team won Bronze. First seed Russia on the other hand must be very unhappy to have missed out the medals in both the Open and Women team finishing 5th and 4th respectively.
Malaysia Men/Open finished in 96th
Necessary Roughness buy place having been initially seeded 73rd at the start of the Olympiad. One of the more disappointing finishes we have had in the history of the Olympiads for Malaysia.

One of the advantages of being a (ex) web programmer is that I have no difficulties taking advantage of the many free web applications out there for my own use.
I got this idea when I got a few SMS from chess vendors selling the latest demo board or chess clock but I’m simply too lazy to type those details on the computer and even if I did, I don’t exactly know where to post it.
Hence, a new section in GilaChess is created – Pasar GilaChess download Cruel Intentions dvd Suicide Blonde video
It runs on a customised version of WordPress with e-commerce features that includes a shopping cart and payment gateway. I took it as a challenge because a friend of mine took a week to custom write something similiar whereas by using free/open source software I got mine up in 2 hours!
Anyway those features are an overkill but let’s just leave them there in case our local market ever needs to use it. In the meantime, any chess vendors who want to advertise a chess product (books, demo board, clocks, software etc) can email me the details so I can put it up.

It seems everybody is offering chess camps or some form of holiday program for kids this coming school holidays.
I was surprised that there is a chess camp that I just randomly discovered while passing Bandar Utama.
From a distance I could make out the word CHESS CAMP.
Got nearer to take a picture of it.
I thought it would be one of those camps organised by coaches I know like Greg or Collin but it turned out otherwise.
I SMSed the number for permission to post this on my blog. To my surprise that person doesn’t even know of GilaChess.com website or yours truly. He thanked me for the publicity and would visit my website later
Goes to show how Chess is not only fast catching on in Malaysia but how marketable it has become.
