PDA for chess

I lost my HP IPaq 4150 :(

image The thing I miss most is not being able to use Pocket Fritz 2. Now with the launch of Pocket Fritz 3, I am itching to find a replacement PDA. However, today’s smartphones (PDA+Phones) have pretty much killed off the standalone PDA.

So I don’t mind getting a cheap 2nd hand PDA. I’m eyeing this one at Lelong.com.my for RM 180. It’s the HP 2200 which is does not have built-in WiFi for surfing the net and it is pretty old fashioned compared to newer PDAs. However  it has a fast 400 Mhz CPU which is perfect for Pocket Fritz 3 so I don’t care about looks or the lack of WiFi.

I have tried Pocket Fritz 3 (estimate ELO 2550) and I’m amazed how close it resembles it’s PC version – Fritz 11. I thought the features packed into Fritz 2 was the limit. Kudos to the programmers who pushed the envelope considering how limited the Pocket PC platform is.

pocket-chess Also, the suite of “Pocket” programs (Endings, Combination, Middlegame, Strategy, Opening Blunders etc) can be installed so that I can practice tactics on the go (in LRT and busses). No need to carry a set of chess books around.

I also attribute the rare above average performance I got (11th-15th place in many tournaments) 2 years ago to my practice on the Pocket PC. Nowadays I finish 30+ position :)

I figure RM 180 Invasion U.S.A. divx is a pretty good bargain considering the cost saved in buying some tactics/middlegame books for practice. Also, it’s much lighter compared to lugging around tactic books. Also, it beats carrying around a heavy notebook just to run ChessBase or Fritz :)

P/S: I have given up on “charity” work for chess but I’m still crazy about chess improvement so there’ll be many more posts like these :)
