I wished I was at GACC tournament on all the days but I just didn’t have the time. It would have been nice to make quick daily updates as the results come out.
I can’t fault GACC volunteers for being about a day late in the updates everyday because they were also busy with multitude of other things to do. Being the “web sponsor” GilaChess.com should have taken over that job. Anyway, it all turned out ok with adequate coverage via the gacc-chess.com website.
This year’s GACC was definitely stronger that last year’s with 2 GMs and a few other titled players taking part. IRAN with their 2 GMs were dominant and easily took the first prize for the team section. Iran took individual champion titles in the Open section as well as the Women section.
Hopefully GACC 2009 will attract even stronger participation like in the past years where chess giants China and Russia took part.
Malaysia still seems to be out of the top 5 overall even though we have the biggest number of participants. Anyway it’s good exposure for the locals to play against international talents. The best Malaysian team was IIUM and they narrowly edged out UM by half a point.
Coach Fadli Zakaria who coached the IIUM team has something to be proud of
The hero of the day for IIUM has to be Ahmad Fadzil Nayan who valiantly held on in a tense game vs WIM Gong Qian Yun. The WIM lost and it was clear how upset she was as she resigned and hastily crumpled her score sheet and threw it into her bag. She had the advantage for most of the game. If Ahmad Fadzil Nayan had lost this game, UM would have won the best Malaysian team.
Here is the game:-
Probably the WIM’s c5 restricting her Bishop’s freedom was the start of some blunders during time trouble. Fritz recommended the pawn grab Bxg4 in the last few moves as winning for Black.
Best Malaysians
Other notable Malaysians in the Individual section is Pok Wern Jian (9th place) and NM Zarul Shazwan (10th place) and NWM Nur Shazwani (4th place – Women).
Also, kudos to the GACC team for running another (13th!) successful International Inter-varsity team championship. They have certainly worked hard making preparations many months ahead of the actual tournament.

‘The hero of the day for IIUM has to be Ahmad Fadzil Nayan who valiantly held on in a tense game vs WIM Gong Qian Yun.’
Hi all. I was there in the GACC tournament.Ahmad Fadzil Nayan resorted to dirty tactics by staring at her throughout the entire game. As a result, she felt so uncomfortable that she had to leave her seat most of the time to avoid Ahmad Fadzil Nayan’s leering stare. In addition, towards the end of the game, Ahmad Fadzil Nayan’s team mates were swarming around the board, making irritating and distracting noises. Of course, this is all about about psychological trick. However, don’t feel you feel ashamed of yourself by staring at a girl throughout the entire game? I think both your skills as well as your manners in treating ladies need some polishing.
