Took a drive home to Teluk Intan – my hometown in Perak and arrived in just over 2 hours today despite being Chinese New Year eve.

Usually it’s quite expensive to go overseas just to play chess. Any program to make playing in overseas tournament more affordable is definitely most welcomed.

last year I’ve got the feeling that my notebook is still infected despite reformatting the harddisk. Trouble is, I forgot that my memory cards, USB thumb drives and iPod were still infected so the exercise in wiping out the hard disk was futile.
Franklyn dvdrip Kapersky confirmed what I suspected. There was an undetected malware on the harddisk that did not seem to do anything malicious. My usually trusted AVG did not find a thing 
. I’ve since uninstalled AVG from all my computers.
However even Kapersky could not delete the malware because it ran as a shared DLL – a file that coud not be deleted while Windows is running. Kapersky repeatedly asked me to restart windows which I did but the irritating malware/virus was still there.
Today I finally found a rescue boot CD which booted up “clean” from the CD instead of the hard disk. Manually went into command prompt and killed the annoying wvu*.dll files.
After running a full scan it’s satisfying to know the computer is clean. It may only be psychological but I feel that the system is running a litter faster and smoother now.
Also, I recommend getting the original version of Kapersky as it is now only selling for RM 45 at Low Yat.

Remis Aman once suggested that someone stood behind interesting games and recorded it. This is especially useful for interesting games that are not recorded for various reasons such as rapid games or in time trouble. Not as silly as it sounds as I’ve seen this done in Philippines where there so many assistant arbiters that they just take a clipboard and record the top boards and bring the recorded partial games to those entering the PGNs. It’s certainly helps and makes it possible for them to post the round’s PGN game almost immediately after the last game ends.
For Malaysian rapid games, it is quite hard to see the top board games online. Also, not many people have the patience or dexterity to watch and record live games while it is played. Here’s one solution using tech:-

CAS – Octagon first allegro for this year (18th January) has been postponed due to unavoildable circumstances.
Apparently TNB sent a letter to the building management informing that on the day of the tournament electricity supply will be cut. That’s a shame as the air-con has already been installed.

Only 4 new year resolution for me.
- Settle last year’s debt which included paying for last year’s webhosting.
- Make chess sites profitable enough to sustain my chess blogging activities. Surplus cash to upgrade gilachess.com to next tier in webhosting plan.
- Increase services on the web including tournament registration system, basic chess e-learning for beginners, centralised chess results database for bloggers to collect results and develop gilachess kids website .
- Try teaching beginner chess classes face to face as well online classes.

Manufacturers are pushing netbooks as the affordable computer to buy in the current “challenging” economy.
Netbooks are not just hype. My uncle who is not so tech savvy just got an Asus EEEPC 900 (160Gb harddisk).
Current price for that model is RM 1200-1400.
