It's an impossible dream because I read even the digitized boards used in the Olympiad did not fully record all the moves correctly.

I had serious thoughts of building software for automatic PGN recording of games using a webcam, in order to make a cheap alternative to the expensive DGT boards.

Unfortunately, I came to the conclusion that it is not practical with today's state-of-the-art object tracking algorithms to implement it, due to the huge amounts of RAM that would be required. Maybe in a couple of years we will see better algorithms and hardware to allow for this.

The camera is portable and light making it possible to place it right above the players' boards (on the ceiling perhaps) . At least two boards should be visible enough to allow move reconstruction based on the recorded video.

Agreed to that Pinoy idea to ease the bulletin guys' job...it's good to have a digital camera nearby to record interesting games during the time scramble or blitz...but you have to be a very tall person to move it around the spectators, if there's any blocking your way :-p
A good hand-held video cam is better so we can view it at difficult angles...

to be able to do that we need many non-playing chess volunteers esp the chess bloggers because they are basically IT masters.

i love the above setup. but spectators need to be disciplined first. or maybe the organizer need to be more strict.

Anyway, the key pusher - "CHESS BLOGGERS UNITED!", anyone to initiate the move??

its quite interesting but i think better use the dgt board like international level do for recording moves. its frustrating if we put digital camera then it is block by other spectator's head/body at the venue.

with dgt board, all games are immediately recorded in PGN format and then we can keep it in chessbase.

maybe the use of camera is to see our favorite's player faces playing 'live'... that what i think
