I am buying this netbook for someone. Supposed to get the EEE PC 904HD but got the 904 model (without the ‘HD’ suffix) which is exactly the same as the former feature wise. I could not find the 904HD model anywhere. It seemed to be out of stock everywhere I asked.
The price for the 904: RM 1399 from Low Yat. Pretty standard price but I chose to buy from this shop with Asus logo on the 3rd floor because it gave a free upgrade to 2Gb RAM and also a free Bluetooth USB dongle. That was the best deal after looking at many other shops.
download Behind Enemy Lines: Axis of Evil dvd
Chess blogger/chess coach Marcus Yeoh looks on while I test the new netbook out at a Hainanese coffee shop on the 1st floor of Low Yat. The netbook had only a few minutes initial charge so I didn’t get to play with it long in Low Yat. I’m most impressed by the 29 seconds bootup time.
Although this is not my EEE PC but I’m definitely going to get one soon. It’s the perfect computer to lug around for the chess road warrior – player or blogger.
PS: In my previous post, I did recommend to avoid getting models like the 904 because it used the slower Celeron processor as opposed to the new Atom N270 and N280. But from my initial tests I find it quite fast and see little difference compared to the faster Asus 1000HE in common tasks such as web browsing and blogging.

November Son download In this troubled times, netbooks make logical alternatives to the more expensive notebooks for chess players. Take this stylish HP Mini Note which in my opinion has the best keyboard ever for a netbook. It is my top two choice for the perfect Patzer Netbook.
It’s the HP Mini Note 1001TU. The first version of this series, HP Mini Note 2133 was almost perfect except that it came with a sluggish CPU – a Via C7 which was inadequate to run OS such as Vista. The new version fixes this as it uses the more “standard” Intel Atom N270. However I think the 2133 silver coloured keyboard made it looked more expensive although both are solid aluminium keys.
Senior Skip Day psp I think it’s the perfect Patzer notebook but for one thing. I don’t like the battery life. which is said to be just over 2 hours with intensive use. It loses out to the ASUS 1000H in this respect but if you can live with the battery life, it’s a very classy netbook to own.
One Hell of a Christmas trailer
Current market price in Low Yat is RM 1699. The specs are pretty common now for netbooks such as 1GB RAM, Atom N270 CPU, 10.2″ screen, Windows XP, 1Kg total weight, 3-cell battery. However the harddisk is a little small at 60Gb losing out to Asus’ 160Gb.
download The Name of the Rose dvd It’s definitely one netbook you won’t be embarassed to pull out and use.
For me, I’m still holding out for the Asus EEE PC 1000HE which still hasn’t reached Malaysian shores.

Chess development in Malaysia may be slow compared to other countries but the interest in the game is growing by leaps and bounds. The number of blogs alone is the highest for any country in Asia. City of Joy movie That’s the Neo Manhattan Chess Club. I missed yesterday’s Stonemaster’s event because I was absent minded and didn’t find the event in my gmail. Oh one advice, if you want free promos on this blog make sure you send me the details to my gmail as I rarely miss them there
Or at least send me a reminder to my gmail account. Getting old and forgetful nowadays..
Anyway there is the NMCC chess talk today (2-4pm) given by National Master Kamal Abdullah. You can find the map and other details at Hairulov’s blog Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans divx
.. I’ll be brining my new camera to take pictures and videos.
I stand corrected that chess cannot make much money. In the area of coaching however, it seems this sector is having a healthy growth despite the recent economic slump. This NMCC chess centre is just one of the many new chess coaching related business that have sprung up.

I had arrived in Jakarta in the late afternoon and was soon meeting up one after another with PERCASI Deputy Secretary General Sebastian Simanjuntak, Publicity Head Kristianus Liem, WGM Irene Sukandar and her brother Jenius Kaiser as well as with Drs Bunawan till late despite having to leave at 4 a.m. to catch a flight to Surabaya.
Then I was was woken by Sebastian with the sad news that our good friend Grandmaster and FIDE Trainer Edhi Handoko has passed away at 1 a.m. He had been ill recently but we did not think it was so serious and I was looking forward to seeing him soon at a coaching assignment or at the JAFPA Chess Festival in April.
Edhi is well known to the ASEAN chess community at large and I am proud to be able to call him a friend since we first met in 1983 when he was already eclipsing the long time No 1. Indonesian GM Herman Ardianysah.
I have seen a lot of Edhi in the past year – meeting him many times at diverse places from Tarakan, Jakarta (JAFPA), Beijing (World Mind Sports Games), etc. and we spent at lot of time together in Dresden at the 38th World Chess Olympiad, often watching the games of the Indonesian team of which he was the captain with McDonald’s for dinner often to follow at GM Susanto Megaranto’s insistence!
There is only one word to describe Edhi’s career – uncompromising.
Edhi played chess without fear or favour and believed that he could find something in any position. His game was full of the tactics that has always epitomised the Indonesian chess school but with his own special twist with incredibly deep calculation of variations.
As a result, he was Indonesian Champion in 1978, 1979, 1984, and 1991, and a member of his country’s Olympiad Teams in 1980, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1992, and 2000.
He became a Grandmaster in 1994 and was Asian Cities Champion in both 1993 and 1994.
When finally overtaken by GM Utut Adianto in the late 80’s as Indonesia’s No. 1, they became a much feared and respected combination of good friends and genial rivals who certainly benefited from each other and together led Indonesia to its best every international results for over a decade.
Gummo In recent years Edhi had started to become a great trainer and brought not only his vast knowledge of the games honed through literally tens of thousands of top level competitive games but also by his attitude to playing chess.
He will be missed greatly as a friend (he had no enemies and no detractors), as a role model for all young chess players, and for the so much more he was starting to offer Indonesian chess in building a new generation of young talents in his new career as a trainer.
Edhi’s funeral procession will be from Rumah Duka Tiong Teng, Solo, Jawa Tengah at 9 a.m. Sunday, 22 February 2009 to the Bonoloyo, Cemetery and is survived by his wife Endang Hastari S and his two sons Ekona Sulistya Wibowo (21 years) and Okana Razzi Giovani.
Air Force One dvdrip Contributions to his family are most welcome and I will be happy and honoured to facilitate these (email me at peterlong64@gmail.com for details).

I know I’ve been inactive for the last 2 months due to work but looking at the website traffic, the volume of visitors have dropped but not by much.
Anyway my work is finished and after a good rest GilaChess websites will be active once more. As you know, my webhost is not happy with higher traffic and I’m currently looking at plugins such as WP Super Cache and possibly other webhosts.

Equus video This is just my idea of a modern chess coach tools:-
Of course the two most traditional items are
Chess Demo board – to show positions, maneuvers, tactics etc to a group of students. A normal chess set if it’s one-to-one.
White board. or a
Video projector. Not cheap yet but prices have dropped and a typical video projector starts from RM 1800.
Webcam – this is when face to face is not possible and since computers and internet is prevalent nowadays, it should not be much of a problem. The prices of webcam has dropped very much and you can get one from RM 50 and above.
Software tools such as Skype have added videos and the latest Skype has improved the quality of video and audio to such an extent that even today’s Streamyx broadband produces great communication quality. I know as I’ve tried Skype in my hometown Teluk Intan talking to my sister in US.
Interactive quizzes – I am a firm believer that students need to be quizzed whether they have understood the materials presented. Many online tools are free nowadays and cobbling together an online quiz is a matter of knowing some tech savvy kid (everybody knows one for sure, or at least knows someone who knows one
)
These quizzes can be linked to a database so that a performance history and profile on the student can be roughly deduced.
Database on student profiles. Their level, weaknesses, strengths etc, Could be paper based or computerised.
Lastly a portable computer is good to have especially if you are the tech savvy type of coach that requires your student to build a database of games on a computer. A netbook is a good bet for ultra portability. The price of a netbook is typically between RM 1000-1800.
If you want a bigger screen notebook the Compaq CQ series has a decent one for about RM 1800 that has a 17 inch screen which is great for presentation to a small group of one or two students.

That was the reply from my webhost support. I was right. My IP was blocked. I could have just turned my modem and router off and on to get a new IP but I was too brain dead to think of it yesterday

My IP was blocked once while I was uploading files to GilaChess website using FTP. After that I could not even browse the website. I emailed Exabytes (my webhost) telling them this and they said my IP was blocked because the system thought I was flooding the webserver with unnecessary traffic and I was a spammer. That was quickly rectified and this happened a few months back.
Three days ago the same thing happened. GIlaChess.com website was ok but my IP was blocked. Meaning I can browse all other website except GilaChess.com. A quck check with online buddies and they say they can access the site. I just emailed Exabytes support and hopefully I can gain access to my own website again. Posting this from Starbucks of all places

Nur Nabila appears in the Kosmo! today (18/02/2009) with a long article spread.
Here’s an excerpt:-
