Although almost every Merdeka team event, there is always at least one GilaChess team entered, this year there was none. However I was part of the IRI-MAS team which consisted of GM Ghaem Maghami Ehsan, WGM Pourkashiyan Atousa, WIM Ghaderpour Shayesteh, and Cheah Eu Gene. It was a good experience but a little to much pressure for me as I lost precious points when all my other team mates were scoring. We were playing mostly on the top 10 tables only.
I also have to thank GM Ehsan has he was really patient to show my shortcomings and provided helpful suggestions after the game. I never really expect a GM would waste his time on a patzer like me.
Team IRI-MAS ended up with 7th placing but definitely could have done better if I didn’t lose 3 precious points when I played.
In the end it was team INA-RTCC whom IRI-MAS met in the final that won the championship. The Indonesian team beat us 3.5 – 0.5. Although INA-RTCC only had and IM and FM playing for them, their 3rd and 4th board are very strong players,

Not officially an International Master yet..
Mok Tze Meng achieves his third and final norm with a commendable result.
Mok’s fine performance in the previous tournaments he entered like the Terengganu Open, Penang Open, DATCC League and Malaysia Open is expected to push him over the 2400 rating needed for the IM title.

Most of my work on the Malaysian Open bulletin is over. Now I can spend more time on the thing I like which is blogging. Or so I thought. Now playing in the IRI-MAS team for merdeka. Lots of pressure because the team members are strong players (except me!).
Here are the teams taking part and their composition (may have changes):-

The battle for the championship.
Negi must beat tournament leader Senador to have a shot at first place.

Being busy with the bulletin I just asked how the last game between GM Negi vs GM Ghaem was coming along. One by one each told me that Negi was lost. So it’s a big surprise when after the crowd dispersed, they told me Negi drew the game!!
Here is the miracle save by Negi:-

At first when I saw the scoresheet I thought it was a quick “grandmaster” draw however I saw a 0-1 at the end of the scoresheet:-

There are certain players whose handwriting is like this:-

(taken from an anonymous scoresheet during the current DATMO 2009)
It gets worse when there 2 players with bad handwriting meet. So far I have around 10 games which end up with only half of the game being legible.
