I read with interest one article from New in Chess that the zero start rule from FIDE was created when an incident involving Anand vs Karpov match where the FIDE president Kirsan Illumzhinov was made to wait about half an hour for Karpov to arrive to officiate the event. No doubt the FIDE president was not happy to be embarassed at such a public event waiting for a player to arrive.
The latest players punished by the zero start rule are the Chinese Wang Yue and Li Chao. Read article here.
To me it seems pretty silly when the players are so near the playing area yet are penalised because they were not sitting at the table. Even Hou Yifan found out the hard way with a penalised game when she was actually in the tournament hall looking at some boards but was not sitting on her chair when the game started. Perhaps a loud speaker system announcing a count down before the game starts to avoid silly losses like these ? I can just imagine players dashing to their seats as if they are playing musical chairs.
I won’t debate about the merits of the zero start rule or otherwise but I’m interested to see what Malaysian chess enthusiast think. Take the poll on the right hand side of this blog.

It’s certainly a unique tournament mixing rapid time control features with incremental time. 20 minutes + 30 second increments allowed for the possibility of squeezing in 10 rounds of chess in two days!

I think Yee Weng will have a hard time today to make up for yesterday’s loss. Although he surprised Nicholas by playing something out of the ordinary by steering the game into a Queen’s Gambit Accepted. The computer engines evaluated Nicholas slightly worse as White but that quickly changed to equal in the middlegame. After some time Nicholas broke through with his Queen and Rook moving in dangerously into Black’s camp and the game was quickly decided. Check out DATCC blog for the Round 2 game.
There is no live broadcast but there should be periodic updates from DATCC blog.

I’m now at the Hari Raya Haji Tourney at Excel Chess, OUG.

I know today is also the 3rd and 4th round of the Malaysian Masters 2009 between IM Lim Yee Weng and FM Nicholas Chan but I wish I can be at two places at the same time. I have to give the Malaysian Masters a miss this time and I’m sure someone else will cover the event.
About 34 players are taking part in this tournament including Mohd Syakir, Jax Tham, Mohd Nabil, Mark Siew, Nur Nabila, Mohd Irman, Wong Jianwen, Low Jun Jian, Mohd Ali Chor, Puteri Rifqah, Nur Najiha, Joshua Foong, and Low Jun Keat.

The first game between IM Lim Yee Weng vs FM Nicholas Chan ended in a draw by repetition. Yee Weng played against Nicholas Sicilian Dragon, an opening which Yee Weng gave a short training seminar during the DATCC weekender tournament.

IM Lim Yee Weng vs NM Nicholas Chan duel today. Not a thing written about it until now!
Nevertheless this is the biggest duel so far in the Malaysian Masters 2009. I missed the Mok-Mas match because I had to go back to Perak but I’ll definitely be there for Yee Weng vs Nicholas.
Bringing along my Celcom prepaid broadbrand and webcam to broadcast live. If everything goes well we could be watching this interesting duel live in 2 hours!
