+ DATCC Weekender 2009 By GilaChess 17 November 2009 at 1:48 pm and have 1 Comment

Came back to KL just in time to witness the DATCC Weekender which is a FIDE rated individual tournament running over two weekends.

The response is pretty good for a first weekend rated event with about 10 rated players taking part. It’s a good opportunity for unrated players to gain an international rating. Altogether there are 30 players are taking part.

As can be seen from the table below, after 4 rounds, we have two joint leaders in

Abdullah Che Hassan and NM Edward Lee .

Also check out the interactive table which now includes pictures of the player when you mouse over the name or result.

Coverage of the event can be found at the DATCC blog, Gilocatur and Fiery Rook.

You’d probably noticed that there was little activity on this blog and gilachess.com.

I was away in Perak for about a month because my father suffered a stroke. At first his right hand and leg were partially paralysed. Thankfully over the weeks with physiotheraphy, he has regained more than 50% use of his limbs and can walk around. He is getting better everyday which is a good sign.

What I want to share here is that, strokes are sometimes pretty hard to detect and recognise. The first incident was just over a month ago when my father fainted and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. What I’m not happy is that it was not recognised as a stroke with preliminary checks by the hospital. He was discharged the very next day when he seemed normal. The fainting incident was presumed to be ‘ear imbalance’ and that my father woke from bed too fast , got dizzy and fainted. He was given medicine for ‘ear imbalance’. My father has been seeing a doctor regularly for high blood pressure and it was supposedly under control. Two weeks later the a second collapse was more serious and he lost control of the right side of his body after he regained conciousness. Only then, a more thorough check including CT scan of the brain revealed blockage scars of the first stroke. If we had known about the first stroke perhaps more preventative measures could have avoided the second stroke. Just know that you should ask for a more thorough checkup with the doctors and not take things lightly when you have high blood pressure and fainting spells. A relative of mine who is a radiologist tells me that in such cases ultrasound of the neck would have given a clearer picture of the cause.

I’m catching up with chess news now and will be updating gilachess over the next few days.
