I didn’t have anything to contribute when given the chance to speak at the recent DATCC meeting chaired by Dato’ Tan last weekend.
However one suggestion by Encik Najib Wahab on the use of CCTV/cameras and big LCD displays to publicise show live chess boards for the public caught my interest. It is definitely nice to view a giant screen TV in a different room with other chess enthusiast. The prices of LCD TVs and monitors have dropped drastically over the years and a 42” or 50” display is not a problem for a big event like DATMO or any event at DATCC.

These LCD screens are very thin and light making it easy to be wall mounted. Probably for a big event like DATMO, a few of these outside the hall focusing on the top boards would be great for publicity as well as keeping enthusiast happy. This would certainly go far in making chess a spectator sport. I’d prefer these screen rather than straining my neck over an interesting game where everyone has crowd around one board.
A good suggestion by Najib was to get companies like LG, Samsung, Panasonic etc to sponsor this display monitors.
With a few webcams, it’s possible to deliver some of the videos via online streaming too. Even better if we can get some IMs or GMs to give commentaries on selected games in the board display rooms.
