Wah the rook is on FIRE!!

In last weekend’s First Saturday I wanted badly to play against Shamsuddin Sabri aka Firey Rook because I thought he would be easy to beat. After this game I have to think twice :) . Behind the nice guy demeanor lies a fierce attacking player!

1. e4 c5 2. d4

image
The start of the Smith Morra gambit.

cxd4 3. c3 dxc3

image

Black accepts the gambit. Perfectly playable but he must know the correct lines to play against this gambit. If not the consequences will be severe as is apparent in this game.

4. Nxc3 Nc6 5. Nf3 d6 6. Bc4 Bg4 ??

image

Too hasty. Bg4 just screams for the following tactic.

7. Bxf7+

image

7. .. Kxf7 8. Ng5+ Ke8

image

And White regains the piece with interest.

9. Qxg4 Nf6 10. Qe6 Nd4 ?

image
Perhaps 10. … Qc8 was better.

11. Qf7+ Kd7 12. O-O h6

image

13. Rd1

White is goes for the attack giving up the attacking Knight for an attacking Rook. No wonder this guy calls himself Firey Rook !!

13. .. hxg5 14. Rxd4  Qb6 15. Be3 Qxb2

image

16. Rxd6+

and the Rook fearlessly lights itself on fire and kamikazes Black’s last defences.

image

Kxd6 17. Rd1+ Kc7 18. Qc4+

image

(Black resigns seeing that Kb8 is hopeless because of bank rank mate)

1-0
