Floppy Discs Death

Sony Corp. will discontinue domestic sales of its 3.5-inch floppy discs at the end of this fiscal year, the company announced on Friday.

The electronics giant, which boasts a 70 percent share of the domestic floppy-disc market, will withdraw from the market at the end of March 2011.

Anybody still using these? I think some kids these have not even seen these discs except in pictures.

 

I remember running Fritz 2 from a floppy in 1994. It was the strongest chess program on the PC at that time :)

Those were the good old days where as students, a friend of mine even managed to squeeze Windows 3.1 into a floppy.

The real “floppy” was the 5 1/4”.

I remember walking into a classroom of computer students and asking if anyone knew if there was any computers in the lab that could read a  5 1/4” floppy. I wanted to transfer my old data from the old floppy to the new 3.5” floppy. All of them look dumbfounded as if they have never seen the floppy before :)
