Lessons from GMs
No, I’m not going for lessons from Ziaur. I can’t afford that. Watching lots of chess videos. I don’t know why but I’m hooked. I just love to see new ideas just shown to me without opening a single chess book. Maybe I’m getting old but every time I open a chess book I’ll find myself asleep almost immediately
. That’s my cure for insomnia.
I remember listening to some promo ads on chess videos I think from Susan Polgar. It stated that chess videos had the advantage 70% more retention and understanding compared to reading chess books or something along that line. I couldn’t agree more as I have 0% retention despite having the chess book on top of my face for hours
Chess videos now give me the option of actually changing to new opening repertoires. That’s a big thing for me as my openings have not changed for 20 years! Of course chess videos are almost all dealing with openings as that sells by promising immediate improvements in one’s opening phase of the game. Of course the quality of the material is also important but at my patzer level, I really don’t care . That’s why I think that’s the most marketable segment of chess videos – openings for players at my level (ELO 1600-1900). For me, I’m just happy seeing any plan or ideas in one opening explained to me simply. At this moment, it doesn’t matter if the idea is good or bad. The clarity of presentation is more important.
It feels really good when you can play a plan confidently – a case of a bad plan is better than no plan at all. Practical play will test if those ideas hold water.
I’m planning to play in Teluk Gong and hopefullyuse a completely new opening repertoire.
