Why DATCC has lost most of it’s appeal to me

It all boils down to two word: WAR ROOM.

Back then when it first started there was the “office/library“ cordoned off the playing area. It was a nice place to view what was happening by putting out a camera on important game(s) and viewing it inside the office. This is effectively an attractive “war room” or a spectator room. We (the non-participants) could kibitz about what was happening and it was quite enjoyable.

Chess is not really a spectator sport but when you have a special place for interested viewers to sit and watch the games, it can become a small spectator event.

One of the reasons Starcraft 2 competitions have exploded and thrived is because it is fantastic as a spectator sport. Event organisers even invests on big screens to show what is happening to the public.

Even in smaller scales, cyber cafes put up “live streams” on multiple big screens for big events for people to watch.

Somehow the expansion of DATCC has made the “office” off limits – which is a pity.

I find myself unconsciously making excuses not to go to a DATCC event. I just realised it must be for this reason I don’t go there much. I still go to DATCC. But not as often.

Of course this is just my opinion and there may be other attractions that will pull in other chess enthusiasts and I may just be alone in thinking this way. If only some space could be allocated to bring this “war room” back…
