Online vs Print
With the cancellation of Quah Seng Sun’s chess column in The Star, I can’t help wondering if online media is fast replacing old media like printed newspapers. I can’t agree with the idea that online will kill print in the long run. An good eye for the bottom line and summary of chess happenings in and out of the country is what Quah Seng Sun’s column has that no other chess website or blog have at this moment. Even Susan Polgar takes Quah Seng Sun’s content on numerous occasion for her blog.
For local events, our many chess blogs more than enough fills in the role of disseminating information. However if The Star Editor really stands by his decision to the chess column, I think this will not help in improving things against online content by alienating the large pool of people who still reads the chess column instead of blogs. It just forces people to switch.
