Three of the best local chess columnist I know of is Peter Long (NST column), Lim Chong (Malay Mail) and Quah Seng Sun (The Star). The first 2 columns have been discontinued many years ago.
I’m happy that Lim Chong’s writing is revived in a section in the DATCC blog – titled “Chess Overboard !”.
Go over and have a read and don’t forget to bookmark it like I have.

I think Yee Weng will have a hard time today to make up for yesterday’s loss. Although he surprised Nicholas by playing something out of the ordinary by steering the game into a Queen’s Gambit Accepted. The computer engines evaluated Nicholas slightly worse as White but that quickly changed to equal in the middlegame. After some time Nicholas broke through with his Queen and Rook moving in dangerously into Black’s camp and the game was quickly decided. Check out DATCC blog for the Round 2 game.
There is no live broadcast but there should be periodic updates from DATCC blog.

I’m now at the Hari Raya Haji Tourney at Excel Chess, OUG.

I know today is also the 3rd and 4th round of the Malaysian Masters 2009 between IM Lim Yee Weng and FM Nicholas Chan but I wish I can be at two places at the same time. I have to give the Malaysian Masters a miss this time and I’m sure someone else will cover the event.
About 34 players are taking part in this tournament including Mohd Syakir, Jax Tham, Mohd Nabil, Mark Siew, Nur Nabila, Mohd Irman, Wong Jianwen, Low Jun Jian, Mohd Ali Chor, Puteri Rifqah, Nur Najiha, Joshua Foong, and Low Jun Keat.

The first game between IM Lim Yee Weng vs FM Nicholas Chan ended in a draw by repetition. Yee Weng played against Nicholas Sicilian Dragon, an opening which Yee Weng gave a short training seminar during the DATCC weekender tournament.

IM Lim Yee Weng – NM Nicholas Chan (Game 1)
Second game will commence at 3.00 pm.

Let’s have some background on the current leader of the 1st DATCC weekender tourney, Ong Thian Loon. He hails from Alor Star. He is this year’s Klang Open champion (ahead of Anas and Mok!) and a team member of Rorshach – winner of the UM team open this year (info from Remis Aman)
In the DATCC weekender he beat NM Edward Lee in Round 7.

Abdullah (‘Dollah’) Che Hassan looks on anxiously as Ong Thian Loon takes on Kamaluddin Yusof on board one using the Black pieces. Dollah is doing fine and is already up a pawn against Yat Guo Jie.
Can Ong draw and become DATCC 1st Weekender Champion ?

Ong Thian Loon is the surprise leader going into Round 9 with 6.5/9. He just needs a draw to take clear first place. However he may find the going hard against battle hardened Kamaluddin Yusof in the final round. Abdullah Che Hassan on the other hand is just half a point behind Ong and may just overtake the latter to become champion should Ong lose to Kamaluddin.

Came back to KL just in time to witness the DATCC Weekender which is a FIDE rated individual tournament running over two weekends.
The response is pretty good for a first weekend rated event with about 10 rated players taking part. It’s a good opportunity for unrated players to gain an international rating. Altogether there are 30 players are taking part.
As can be seen from the table below, after 4 rounds, we have two joint leaders in
Abdullah Che Hassan
and NM Edward Lee
.
Also check out the interactive table which now includes pictures of the player when you mouse over the name or result.
Coverage of the event can be found at the DATCC blog, Gilocatur and Fiery Rook.
