Tan Wei Hao wins KL Festival Rapid 14 March 2010 at 7:58 pm by GilaChess

13 year old Tan Wei Hao finished undefeated in the KL Rapid Festival held this Sunday (14 March 2010).

He won 4 games but had to settle for a draw against Yat Guo Jie in round 3 and another draw after a tense last round battle vs Mohamed Ismail (Max).

Blogger Yat stayed back in KL instead of going to NAG in Penang. He took part in a simul against CM Collin Madhavan and got some consolation for missing NAG.

It’s good to see more chess simuls are they are good marketing tools to make chess more interesting to the public.

My first round opponent was Jax Tham who abandoned his First Saturday tournament due to poor turnout to join the KL GP 2nd leg. Lucky me :(

Even though only 3 main cash prizes were up for grabs 43 teams took part in this event clearly showing the money is not the main concern

Round 2 is still on but some players have already completed and qualified for tomorrow’s round.

They are:

  • Nurul Huda Wahiduddin
  • Khairunissa Wahiduddin
  • Nur Nabila Azman Hisham

Li Ting and Fairuz are fighting it out in the Rapid (25 min) playoffs after they drew both their games. The first rapid game was won by Li Ting. the second is still on going.

Malaysian 6 point lead gained on the first day playing classical was quicky erased on the second day when Singapore trounced Malaysia in 2 rounds of rapid as can be seen from the table above. The overall result enabled Singapore to take back the Dato’ Tan Kim Yeow Trophy – winning by a narrow one point.
