Mas is paired against Arroyo Christian (ELO 2213). Even though Arroyo’s ELO seem to indicate Mas should likely win. However, Arroyo did cause an upset when he beat Nguyen Van Huy (2423) in Round 1. He only lost in Round 2 to Gao Rui (ELO 2500).

Yes that’s right. It’s not over yet and there is yet another tournament right after the Asian Continental in Philippines. Mas is also playing in the second tournament and has won his first round game against Philippino Portogalera Ric (ELO 2240). This is Mas’ second chance at a GM norm and we wish him all the best.

Even though not as strong as the Asian Continental, there are no less than 17 Grandmasters taking part in the second tourney.

With as many as 40 grandmaster’s competing the Asian Continental is turning into a very good potential for talented players to earn norms. Even in the first round, Philippines super GM Wesley So beat untitled Mongolian Bayarsaikhan Gundavaa. IM Julio Saddora Catalino playing the White pieces beat GM Kazhgaleyev Murtas.
