The face of the leader 21 March 2010 at 4:18 pm by GilaChess

A perfect 6 out of 6 !! Suhairi Hussein is leading the Stonemaster Amateur at the moment.

Should have known from his fierce demeanor before the tournament started was a sign :)

Two more rounds to go. Can Suhairi continue his perfect form?

Relief. With another loss my chances for prizes is virtually nil. Now I can play for fun. :)

Have not seen who is the leader is but Sahir Sarifdin has 4/5. Yat 3/5.

A total of 108 players are taking part in this tournament.

+ KL GP: Round 2 By GilaChess 06 March 2010 at 8:54 pm and have No Comments

After my disappointing loss in first round I really regret wasting my time playing in this tournament. Although there is only 22 players in the Open section, more than half the field is stronger than me and I would be lucky to finish with a 50% score.

My second round opponent opened with 1. g4 – the Grob!!

I hate to face such crazy and unorthodox openings so I tried to steer the game out of my opponent’s book by avoiding non-committal centre moves like d5 or e5. I played 1.. g6 instead and was happy to see my opponent start to think after the third move. The win wasn’t quick and took 40+ moves and almost my full 45 minutes on my clock to checkmate my opponent.

Needless to say it’s tiring and I am sorry to sound like a broken record, but I have to say I still regret playing in this tournament :( Hmmm.. perhaps I can learn something from all the games I’ve played. But then who am I kidding. This is just a rapid tourney and there’s no carbon copy to keep as we have to submit our original scoresheets. And I have a bad memory.)

Strong players in discussion. Sahir Sarifudin (left)and Nik Ahmad Farouqi (right) while Abdul Haq (middle) looks on.

Good idea to use of the projector to show the pairings but perhaps bigger text would make it easier to read from far
(Hint: on the Mozilla browser press ‘Ctrl’ and ‘+’ keys for bigger text)

Encik Azhar seems to be squinting his eyes to see the names.

My first round opponent was Jax Tham who abandoned his First Saturday tournament due to poor turnout to join the KL GP 2nd leg. Lucky me :(

I took White against Jax and the game was a Pirc.

+ KL Grand Prix 2nd Leg By GilaChess 06 March 2010 at 6:36 pm and have No Comments

image

I’m at the KL Grand Prix right now because I heard that the playing field was weak and only 22 players was taking part in the Open section. So I went thinking that a top 10 position would be realistic.

image

As usual that logic is flawed as last minute entries changed the field to a very strong one.

As I look around I see strong players like Kaushal Khandar, Abdul Haq, Roslina Marmono, Low Jun Keat, Low Jun Jian, Nabila, Nabi, Nur Najiha, Roshan, Jax Tham, Sahir Sarifdin, and Mark Siew.

image

There are at least 3 bloggers in the room including me. The other two are Yat Guo Jie and Shamsuddin Sabri (Firey Rook)

The first leg of this Grand Prix was won by Yeoh Li Tian with a perfect 6/6. Li Tian is not playing in this leg.

For the Under 12 section the siblings that took the first and second position the previous legs, Subramaniam and Nithyalakshmi.

+ UMTeam 2010: Rd 5 By GilaChess 28 February 2010 at 9:13 pm and have No Comments

We meet team 4th Stepin round 5.

image

I started my game with good fortunes after winning a pawn. However I could take advantage of the material plus. Played aimlessly and ran short of time. With only 3 minutes vs my opponents 7 minutes I started playing fast. This is where playing bullet online really helped. My opponent’s time equalled mine 2:50 each and I proceeded to win material and the game. My opponent obviously wasn’t a blitz or bullet player (lucky me!).

However my other team mates all lost. Yat’s perfect 100% score was spoilt in this round.

Next round back to the hot room :(

This was Bloggers United in Round 3.

This is us in Round 3.

I’m already sweating as soon as I sit down.

My final position as White. I didn’t see the back rank mate.

Our team still won 4-0 because one move before the checkmate, Black had already ran out of time :)

This means we will go back to the comfortable air con room next round.

Bloggers United met the UPM team. FireyRook and me lost but luckily Yat and Alfred won to tie the match so at least we were still unbeaten.

image

Sitting across us is last year’s defending champion. Team Roscharh. There are two rooms, the top 11 boards play in the cooler air con room. The lower boards play in the second room which also has air cons but is hotter. Our draw costed us to be demoted to the ‘hot room.

+ After Round 1 By GilaChess 28 February 2010 at 8:33 pm and have No Comments

image

Didn’t see the results of the other teams so I’ll just report on my team, Bloggers United.

We met team with a scary name of Silent Killers. Luckily they were weak on board 1 and 3 which we quickly won as White. We lost board 2 against their strongest player who happened to be a female and Firey Rook drew an inferior position which was a good thing. So we won 2½ –1½. The team event is decided on Match Points and total points is used for tie break. A good first round results.

The Blogers United team composition : Yat Guo Jie, Alfred Ting, Andrew Ooi and Shamsuddin Sabri. We ‘lost’ a blogger, Marcus Yeoh, because he had some last minute thing but were lucky to find Alfred Ting on such short notice.

The event is quite strong with players like IM Mas, IM Mok, Ian Udani, Lim Zhuo Ren, Yeoh Li Tian and many other strong names I can’t recall at the moment.
