KUALA LUMPUR: The Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) have appealed to the Education Ministry to include squash among the sports on the national schools (MSSM) championship calendar this year.
Squash was one of the 11 sports dropped from the calendar. The others were bowling, archery, table tennis, rugby, cricket, sailing, softball, handball, cross country and chess.
The lack of funds was the reason for the ministry to reduce the number of MSSM championships.
The SRAM deputy president, Datuk Syed Mustaffa Syed Ali, said that Malaysia had produced world-class squash players and they hoped to see more youngsters playing in the MSSM, which is one of the important junior championships in the country.

At least squash has a strong point included back in MSSM. They have world class representatives like Nicol David, Mohd Azlan Iskandar or Ong Beng Hee. We do not have such successful chess players yet.
What’s more is that squash already has a big national junior circuit for Under-9, Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, 17 and 19 age-groups sponsored by CIMB. Winners of the event are sponsored to play in the Hong Kong Junior Open. Even with this , they still see the importance squash to be included in MSSM.
