Chess as a sport … or not
Sitting down at the mamak shop typing this out on my PDA.
1 ) Chess is not a sport.
Chess organizers have spent years trying to convince the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that chess should be included as an Olympic sport. However, it’s hard to do that when superficially most people see chess as a board game with wooden pieces and shuffling them around and pressing the chess clock is hardly seen as physically challenging work.
2 ) Chess is a sport.
The 2006 Asian Games saw Chess included as a medal sport. The tension of a serious professional game is comparable to the stress endured by boxers in a 10-round fight. Nerves, psychology and a high sense of fitness level is important to stay in top level chess. So there is definitely an element of sports in it.
