Blitz game from Round 1 of the World Mind Games currently underway in Beijing, China. Hou Yifan lost to Stefanova in the Semifinal blitz. In the end Kosteniuk won the event by beating Stefanova in the finals.

Will we see another Merdeka chess festival of the same level as this year’s? Will there be another Malaysia open chess championship that can match the pulling power of the Arthur Tan memorial? Do our local players benefit from the presence of foreign chess talents? How can we ensure that our players benefit from them?

I think player’s like IM-elect Lim Yee Weng in particular benefitted as he has got most of his ELO increase on Malaysian soil. Of course there should be more than that one success. But I’m of the opinion that DATMO is only 5 years and Malaysia has just got on the International chess map even though we have had other past events like the Wah Seong, Asian cities etc. We are just beginning to be known by foreign chess players and Malaysia is becoming another regular stop for those globe trotting GMs.

So what do you think? Have Malaysian chess and local players benefitted enough from DATMO?

Intramuros, located along the southern bank of the Pasig River, was built by the Spaniards in the 16th century and is the oldest district of the city of Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Its name, in Spanish, intramuros, literally “within the walls”, meaning within the wall enclosure of the city/fortress, also describes its structure as it is surrounded by thick, high walls and moats. During the Spanish colonial period, Intramuros was considered Manila itself.

All I did was just turn off AVG, a freeware antivirus, for a moment while trying to install a different antivirus. As soon as I disabled AVG I started getting popups after less than 30 minutes!! The popups said that I have malware infection when in fact the popup program itself was spyware. I was surprised how fast I got infected and I wasn’t even running the browser!

Then I realised the WiFi connection was open and the router does not have a firewall. Later I learnt that you can get attacked from the Internet without a firewall or antivirus on. Lesson learnt. When disabling your antivirus to install a new one, make sure that there is no Internet connection !! Scanning the computer now to find it full of spyware and trojans.

Looks like the safest solution now is to format the harddisk . That’s half a day down the drain.

I’ve said “sorry” to the webhosting company and they’ve restored this blog. As safety measure, I’ve disabled the shoutbox for the moment.

Update: I’ve enabled it back but for registered members only. I’ve also slowed down the ‘refresh rate’ from 8 seconds to 60 seconds. So if you make a shout post, it’ll take about a minute before it shows up so please do not click on send multiple time when your shouts doesn’t show up immediately.
