Kindle Chess Books

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of reading on the iPad. Well mostly comics, articles from the Reader’s Digest and Starcraft 2 eBooks on the iPad.

Most of these are free editions but I am getting sold on the idea to buy electronic editions of books and magazines as the experience is not much different from reading a book.

For example, Reader’s Digest is only USD 14.99 for one year subscription. That’s just around 1/3 of the price of the print edition. Also the iPad edition often have extras such as videos of the article.

Anyway, I searched on Amazon for Kindle version of chess books and only a handful turned up.

I found the above from NM Dan Heissman interesting. It’s not really a book for chess players to improve but more for chess coaches where the author himself reveals methods he himself used in coaching his students.

The price of the e-edition is USD 9.99 which is pretty reasonable compared to other chess books in print.

You can get this Kindle edition from Amazon. The big disappointment is that Malaysians will find it hard to get it.

I don’t know what is the reason but Malaysian credit cards are not allowed to buy Kindle editions of the books. Perhaps that’s the main reason Kindle readers have not taken off in Malaysia. I have yet to see the Kindle Fire! Also, you cannot download the Kindle reader app for the iPad/iPhone from Malaysia.

P/S:

If you don’t mind to pretending to have a US address and dong some IP hiding, there are ways around to buy Kindle e-books. Google search it.

Last year it was a shame that GACC for the first time in many years got cancelled.

The reason was timing as the semester changes in the universities messed up the original schedule of the event so much so that it was impossible to hold it as no students were available yet during the time the event was supposed to be scheduled.

Thankfully this year, the event continues and it is the 16th GACC. As in many years, GilaChess will be the “official website sponsor” for GACC. What this means is GilaChess.com will promote the event through all GilaChess related website and portals including the official GACC tournament website. Please find details of the events there.

Less one clash

With the Teluk Intan tourney postponed there is less one clash on the 27th June.

Sabak Bernam and NCC2012 are still on on those dates as far as we know.

A change as the Sabak Bernam event has changed dates to 27th of March.

This means there is a 3 way clash on that date between Teluk Intan , Sabak Bernam and the National Closed event.

Like I said before, it’s getting harder for chess organisers this year to find dates that do not clash.

This is the first time I saw this message on my iPad 3. Immediately took it out of the casing to cool down faster. Well at least there is detection for over heating. Waited a minute and turned on without any other messages.

Female players in Starcraft

Personally, I find more female Starcraft players compared to chess players online.

The last one I met was Platinum level and she even took time off to give me tips on the game.

Here’s Linda aka Pikachu, a taiwanese singer, actress and pro-gamer!

Also 4-10 hours practicing and training in the game is definitely as serious as what most “pro” chess players do too.

At the end of the video she even invites viewers to play against her. Really? I would actually be very intimidated. Getting crushed FAST like a bug is no fun especially against a girl. So no, if I actually see her online I would not rush to challenge her.

Typical games in Starcraft last around 20 mins or more. Here’s a crusher at competitlve level in 7 minutes.
