+ Pictures of 1st Perak GP anybody? By GilaChess 12 March 2010 at 11:13 am and have No Comments
I really wanted to go to Ipoh last weekend for the 1st Perak Grand Prix leg but had no transport.
Anyway, I hope I can get some pictures of the historic event where a record 189 players turned up to participate. I want to include that in the results at Gilachess.com and the wiki.
If you have any pictures of the event, please email me at:

+ Scholar Base Chess Camp (15-19 March) By GilaChess 12 March 2010 at 6:56 am and have No Comments
I hate this time of year because school holidays is about to begin. The shopping complexes are jam packed with people, there is traffic jams and I can’t go out to watch movies on weekdays because of the crowd.
Anyway, I’m sure the kids are happy with it. There is the usual holiday chess camp organised by various coaches and academies. So far besides the one held at DATCC here’s another one involving our newest IM, Mok Tze Meng.

+ Different chess culture in Penang By GilaChess 11 March 2010 at 11:15 pm and have No Comments
One of the spotlight discussion on shoutbox these few days was the ‘controversial’ decision taken by MCF was to hold the National Age Group in Penang. I have nothing to add but an observation that Penang has a different chess culture from players in Selangor and KL.
For example last year’s NAG I saw the Penang kids walk over one after another to enter their games into the notebook right after the game. What they do with the games I do not know but I presume this will aid the coaches to help the students later. It may or may not prove useful but these are good elements for team spirit and unity. It was easy to recognize the Penang players because they wore the same uniform T-shirt. I don’t see any of the KL/Selangor kids doing the same. They are their own individuals. Penang also came by the busloads last year showing some good organisation by Penang Chess Association. Klang valley players I believe have to arrange their own transport to go to Penang this year.

+ Wiki can display chess games on page By GilaChess 11 March 2010 at 10:55 pm and have No Comments
It’s been a long time since I’ve been stumped by a programming bug. Guess I’m really getting old to take such a long time to find and fix an error that occured only on one line.
Really felt silly that it took over an hour of changing the wrong lines of codes trying to fix things.
Anyway the result is that the new wiki has a PGN player. Easier see the results for yourself. Take a look.

+ Drop in participants at NAG 2010 By GilaChess 11 March 2010 at 10:28 am and have No Comments
I just made a comparison with just one section the Under 16 of NAG 2009 and NAG 2010.
From last year’s blog there were 58 players taking part in the U16 while the pre-registration number up till today is only 28 for this year’s National Age Group.
Another comparison is the U10 Boys which had 78 players but only 36 pre-registered this year. I’m sure some other blog will make a more accurate comparison of all age group when NAG actually starts in 2 days time.

taken from NAG 2009 blog
I covered last year’s NAG but will not be able to go to Penang this year. However I’m sure there will be more than enough blog coverage from various bloggers up north.

+ Lost chess results By GilaChess 11 March 2010 at 10:19 am and have No Comments
One of my regrets since starting GilaChess somewhere in 1999 was that I did not backup the various chess results.
Consequently many years of results were lost when I changed servers. I’m trying to archive all the results I have now using a Wiki. Starting from this year onwards. I’ll move backwarks to past years when I have the time.

+ 23 inch touchscreen By GilaChess 11 March 2010 at 9:08 am and have No Comments
While on the subject of computer peripherals, this is another offer that caught my eye. Like all tech gadgets, the price of touch screen LCDs have fallen too. The last price I remember for a 15” LCD touch screen was around RM 1500. So a 23” touch screen for under RM1000 is relatively cheap.
I am still itching to know if playing online chess using touch screen LCDs is practical.
Features of this model:
- 23″ wide (16:9), full HD LCD screen
- Rapid 2ms response time, 80,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 300 cd/m2 brightness
- Multi-touch capability lets users rotate images, flip pages, pinch and draw on the screen with hand gestures
- Advanced HDMI connectivity delivers highest quality video/audio currently available
- 2 integrated speakers with 1.5W power
Of course you’d need Windows 7 to fully use the multitouch features. Anyone who has bought this monitor and tried it out please tell me if it’s any good for FICs, Playchess etc.
One thing I can’t help thinking is how oily the screen will get using my fingers.
(PS: I’m not advertising for any computer shop. You can find the offer easily from the flyers you get passing by the shops in Low Yat Plaza)

+ Dropping prices of harddisks By GilaChess 11 March 2010 at 8:59 am and have No Comments
Just passed by a computer shop and noticed that the prices of portable harddisks is falling!
I’m planning to get a one Terrabyte portable harddisks to backup all my photos and videos. I think DVD backups are just not reliable enough. Also the price per Gig (around RM1) is more expensive compared to harddisks (around RM 0.37).

+ Featured game: Hou Yifan – Sasikiran (2009) By GilaChess 10 March 2010 at 2:05 pm and have No Comments
Here’s a game between wondergirl Hou Yifan vs one of India’s strongest GM, Sasikiran Krishnan.
Yifan has white vs Sasikiran’s ultra solid Karpov’s variation of the Caro Kann. The final position is quite pretty.

+ Better than paper By GilaChess 09 March 2010 at 6:59 pm and have No Comments
Don’t you just hate it when the pairing comes out and you have to squeeze in a crowd all trying to find their names on a small A4 sized paper pasted on a wall.
A projector and a notebook is much preferable way to see the pairings.
I already see this being used in DATCC and KL GP tourneys. I’m sure more organisers will pick up on. It’s small things like these that make the tournament experience that much better.
