Looking at the national rating list, there seems to be many anomalies in the ratings of some of the strongest Malaysian players relative to some benchmark players.

If we were to accept LYW, RL and NC to be at the top of the heap and rated in the 1900s, going down the list we immediately see Yeoh Chin Seng at 1759, Kamal at 1758, Ismail Ahmad at 1730, Leong Mun Wan at 1724, Lim Kian Hwa at 1648, Jax Tham at 1732, Saprin at 1723 eg. to be grossly under-rated. What happens is when these players take part in tournaments they will pull down the performances of their opponents by virtue of their unrealistic ratings.

Can the rating authority take action to rectify the problem to present a more balanced rating list?

It shows that you haven’t been to any tourney for so long that you can’t even read a table properly.FYI the actual rating is listed next to the Federation, while the one you are referring to is the average opponent’s rating.

Of course there will be some initial discrepancy eg. look at Tedy Sukirman, since this is the first time he’s playing in Malaysia, his FIDE rating is used as his Malaysian rating; but this will be corrected over time.

I’ve been to so many tournaments and I don’t even know that!! :)

This is a perfect example of unconstructive posting on the net. You should address the rating discrepancy instead of narrow minded personal verbal attack on me for not crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s.

Don’t you realise that makes the situation even worse than I thought. Now LYW, RL and NC are at 2100+, K Wahiduddin at 1770, J Ong at 1762, YCS at 1772, Ahmad Ismail( World Police Champion)at 1715, Marcus Yeo at 1634 and many others as well are so under-rated. They are some 300-400 points off and I am certain there is no such chasm betweem them and the top 3.

A national rating list which makes no attempt to reconcile the obvious existing rating discrepancies is of doubtful value to the promotion of healthy chess development.

I’ve heard Tse Pin say before that the National rating list is 200-300 points below the actual ELO rating.

It is not so much about how many points eg LYW’s national rating is compared to Fide’s. It is about how many national rating points he is above eg Ismail Ahmad, an unbelievable 408!!!!! With that difference LYW is expected to wipe the floor with IA theoretically, but we all know that cannot be the case in reality. Do you agree?
